Hirano-cho Machiya

平野町 町家

Hirano-cho machiya offers the feeling of Showa era of the 1920's,

and the courtyard of it faces the great stone of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple.

In the Showa era Shinmachi Street prospered as the merchant town of Kyoto, and still there are many traditional machiya town houses. On Shinmachi Street you will find our Hirano-cho Machiya standing quietly among other traditional buildings from the 1920’s.
One of the unique features of Hirano-cho Machiya is that it has three traditional Tokonoma alcoves wich are recessed spaces used to display artwork.
This machiya town house has been carefully renovated to keep as much of its original structure and materials as possible. Hirano-cho Machiya will you take back to the time when the people of Kyoto truly experienced the fusion of Japanese tradition and European (and American) culture.

Hirano-cho Machiya has a large dining table in the middle of the living room.
You can enjoy taking a bath in a bathtub made of Chinese black pine tree while enjoying the view of the garden.
The first-floor bathroom is equipped with a double-bowl sink.
The two bedrooms on the second floor are traditional Japanese-style tatami rooms.
Each room has its own toilet separate from the bathrooms.
