Machiya × Art

At Iori Machiya Stay, we have provided a space where you can feel the aesthetic sense of a Machiya such as plaster walls, floors, and fusuma.

We are trying to display the works of contemporary young artists in the unique space of the historic Machiya house.

Sit on a tatami mat and appreciate it, or lie down in the bedroom and look at it. Through such an experience of traveling as if to live, we will continue activities to convey the new charm of Machiya.

<Mina Kazuki INTERVIEW>
“When I was in high school, I started to study oil painting in earnest at a painting prep school. From that time I was studying based on realistic techniques, but I forgot all of the techniques I had cultivated until now, As a result of repeated trial and error, I came up with this expression, thinking that I should make a work without giving up.
I am very particular about the formulation of paints, which is the theme of my work, and sometimes even a slight change in the amount of water can cause the paints to fade or the swelling to disappear.
I think that if I continue to pursue that path even with just one paint, I can find something that is related to the "way" that I long for, such as calligraphy and tea ceremony. In recent years, we've been receiving more and more feedback from customers, and I'm glad we believe in it and continue.
In this exhibition, we have created an exhibition space with an emphasis on “setting”. For example, on the first floor, where there is a guest room, I dare to display the work low so that I could enjoy the garden and the work at the same time. And the main work Daisaku was exhibited in the back room on the second floor, which is the room of the master of today's Machiya, the layout of the exhibition was decided according to the intention of the designer of the old Kyomachiya, and a work that fits there was made. .
